First Day Home

Toby,

Today was the first day that Daddy went back to work!  Mommy was a little nervous being by herself but you did awesome!  We’re not sure if you are just spoiling us early, but you are a pretty easy baby.

Today we started with a couple early AM feedings at 2:45 and 6:00 and luckily you let Mommy sleep for 2 hours in between.  After you were done around 6:45, Mommy rocked you back to sleep so she could have a quick bowl of cereal.   Daddy gave you a pacifier when he left for work because you were a little fussy but then you fell back asleep for good so we slept again until 9:00.  You have no problem sleeping in your crib now as long as we swaddle your arms good.   Mommy woke up first and watched you sleep on the video monitor until you started moving around.

After the morning feeding, we changed you into a cute blue and white striped onesie and then hung out in Mommy and Daddy’s room for a bit and watched some TV.  Mommy was debating about putting you down in your crib real quick to take a shower, but decided to try out the rocker chair instead.  You haven’t been a fan of the chair the previous two times we tried it but this time you did great!  Mommy was able to take a normal shower (didn’t have to rush!) while you hung out in the chair in the bathroom, and you didn’t start fussing until after she brushed her teeth.

You started getting hungry again around 11:30 so we nursed and then you fell asleep right afterwards in your crib.  Mommy should have napped, but she decided to clean out the rest of her hospital bag that she never unpacked and organize some things in her room.  You slept until 2:30 and then wanted to eat again so Mommy made herself a quick lunch to eat while you were nursing…Mommy is going to start pumping this week because these constant feedings are tiring for everyone!

Later in the afternoon, we took out your activity mat to do a little tummy time and you didn’t fuss for at least a few minutes.  You already have pretty good strength lifting your head!  Maggie watched us but kept a safe distance as she’s still unsure about you.  After tummy time, Mommy propped you up in the Boppy on the floor so she could test out the new lens for the camera that Grandpa bought.  Mommy could take a million pictures of you, you are just too cute :)

You started fussing and Mommy realized you had a HUGE dirty diaper.  You haven’t been going on a regular basis (though you have plenty of wet diapers), so this one may have been an explosion if you were wearing a newborn diaper.  Luckily it wasn’t too bad.  We switched you into 1’s yesterday because of the red marks around your thighs – we thought the newborns were getting too tight already!  Mommy’s curious to see what you weigh tomorrow at your appointment.

We went downstairs and hung out in the living room for a bit and then you started to fall asleep on Mommy’s chest so she watched TV for awhile.  You woke back up around 5:00 to eat again while Mommy watched a crazy dramatic Lifetime movie.  Daddy got home right before 6:00 and took you right away once you were done eating – he missed you :)  Overall we had a great day; you only fussed a couple times and Mommy was able to calm you down almost right away.  You love rocking in the nursery glider - it helps you fall asleep very fast.

Hopefully later this week the weather is nicer out so we can go out for a few walks, but I think we kept ourselves busy today considering we were stuck inside!

Love, Mommy

Toby – Weekly Update: Week 1

I’m going to try to do a weekly update for Toby that replaces my preggo updates, but I have a feeling a lot of them will end up just being picture recaps depending on how much time I have during the week :)   Here’s a brief run-down of our first week:

Weight: Born 7 pounds, 11 ounces and discharged from hospital at 7 pounds, 5 ounces.  Was back up to 7 pounds, 8 ounces at his first check-up on Wed 6/20.

Height: Born 19.5 inches, measuring the same at the check-up.

Medical Issues: All recovered from his circumcision surgery.  Cord stump is still on and healing.

Sleep: Was rough the first couple nights home but he’s doing MUCH better now.  As long as we swaddle him tight, he sleeps in his crib for 2-3 hours at a time, and sometimes I even have to wake him up to eat.  He also naps in the pack n’ play with no problems now.

Clothes/Diapers Sizes: Newborn for both.

Diet: Just breastmilk.  Sometimes gets too frustrated trying to latch on in the beginning but once he’s on, he eats for about 30-40 minutes.

Baby Gear Love: Boppy has been a must-have for every feeding.  Miracle Blanket and Aden & Alis Blankets for swaddling help him sleep.

Milestones/Firsts: First car ride home on Mon 6/18.  First time to a public place (doctor’s office) on Wed 6/20.  First shopping trip to Bed, Bath & Beyond and Target with Mommy & Daddy on Thurs 6/21.  First visit to a friend’s house (Jenna & Greg) on Fri 6/22.

Likes: Snuggling on Mommy or Daddy’s chest, being swaddled, eating, car rides.

Dislikes: Being changed (though he’s getting better), getting his nails filed.

Postpartum – Mommy:  I think I’m still pretty swollen (my hands and feet definitely are).  I gained 31 pounds overall and I’m down 15 now.  Sore, but not in any serious pain.  Some days I take Motrin but I don’t have to every day.  Still looking pregnant, but I am surprised how fast my belly has shrunk already.  Trying to get used to my huge boobs and leakage…ugh, joys of motherhood.  Overall I’m amazed at how quickly my body has recovered – definitely a benefit of delivering vaginally with little pain meds.

Hospital Bags – What We Used

I will hopefully put together a birth story in the next week or so, but I did want to post what we actually used from our hospital bags for future reference.

I wore the hospital gown the whole time since it was easy access when the nurses needed to check my vitals and everything.  I switched from a sports bra to a nursing bra shortly after I delivered.  I used everything the hospital gave – pads and underwear – and asked for extras to take home.  What I’m most glad I brought are my own toiletries especially the face cleanser wipes, the lanolin cream, and the Boppy.

Things that are crossed off we did not take out of our bags and/or use.

Mommy’s bag:

  • travel-sized toiletries for me and hubby including face cleanser wipes, moisturizer, deodorant, lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes, chapstick, shampoo, conditioner, body wash.
  • make-up: powder foundation and mascara
  • hairbrush, hairspray, hair ties, bobby pins
  • 2 nursing tanks (only used 1 to wear home)
  • 2 nursing bras (wore 1 in hospital and then other 1 home)
  • 1 open cardigan to wear home
  • 2 pairs loose fitting yoga pants (only wore 1 pair home)
  • 3 pairs undies
  • robe-hoodie (I wore this home instead of my cardigan – it’s more of a jacket length so it’s okay to wear in public)
  • nursing nightgown
  • flip flops
  • nursing pads and lanolin cream
  • maxi pads
  • birthing ball  (I tried using this at home when I was having contractions and it didn’t do much for me so we left it in the car and I never had Hubby run out to get it)
  • nightlight (we plugged this in but only turned off all the lights once or twice)
  • Boppy

Baby C’s bag (diaper bag + my purse)

  • 2 outfits for bringing home (newborn size and 0-3 size), including a pair of socks and a hat (only had to use the newborn size outfit, socks)
  • 1 swaddle blanket to put over him in the carseat (too hot outside)
  • 2 pairs mittens (only used 1 pair to come home in as the hospital onesies had mittens attached to the sleeves)
  • baby book for footprints and other notes
  • some essentials that will be moved over from my purse…phone, wallet (license, insurance cards)
  • my medical records for my back surgery just in case they don’t have the anesthesiologist notes on file from our meeting a few months ago
  •

  • Daddy’s bag (his backpack)

  • iPad/iPhone charger
  • iPad
  • camera and charger

  • video camera and charger (we barely even took pictures on our actual camera as we just used our iPhones)

  • pillow

  • swim trunks (he just stayed outside the shower and used the handheld head to spray my back)

  • change of clothes

  • PJ pants and slippers (forgot slippers so he used a pair of hospital socks)

  • change for vending machines (I think we only bought a couple things from the machines)

  • snacks (Goldfish, trail mix packs, granola bars, fruit snacks) & Vitamin Waters (we ended up taking a few packs of the trail mix and fruit snacks home)

  • So we did end up using a lot of the things we packed but I really only needed to pack like I was going away for one night.  I don’t think there’s anything we were missing and needed from home while we were there.  Only suggestion would be to pack an empty duffel bag to bring home any extras the hospital gives (aka you steal) and all the gifts you receive from visitors!

This is probably the cleanest and most organized it will ever be :)  Now all we need is Baby C and the room will finally be complete!
